Recently I’ve been reading a lot of comparative documentation on three of the main players in the virtualization space which include VMware, Citrix and Microsoft. I have setup and used each of these virtualization platforms and each one has their own features and drawbacks. I think if you look long enough, you will eventually see through the marketing smoke and come to the conclusion that ESX, XenServer and Hyper-V are all great products that accomplish pretty much the same things. They all offer a solution for maintaining high availability. They all support virtual machines with enormous specifications and they all have the ability to migrate VMs between hosts.

This past week, Jason Sharp and I put on a presentation for C/D/H’s Annual Technology Briefing Series on the topic of virtualization. At a high level, we addressed numerous technologies and trends in this growing area. The one discussion we had with the attendees that still has me thinking was power consumption and resource requirements. I think this area really expands on the numerous benefits of virtualization and server consolidation.

I have spent some time in the last week developing forms in InfoPath 2007. Several of the forms used the Contact Selector control. The control was used in various ways, all of which required promoting the value of the user’s name. Search Server 2008 Express and WSS
One of my clients has been evaluating SharePoint as an architectural decision for their organization. To start, they decided to use the free Windows SharePoint Services (WSS); however WSS does not contain all of the full Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS) elements.
One very important feature that is missing from WSS is search. Microsoft provides site level search in WSS but what if you need to search data outside of WSS? Yes you guessed it, Microsoft has an answer for this: Search Server 2008 Express.

I have been a fan of Windows Mobile (WM) devices for years - since the Windows CE days. I have owned other phones, like the Palm Treo, but I keep coming back to the Windows Mobile platform. My son thinks iPhone is hip with its slick interface, but I find that my AT&T Tilt running WM 6.1 has more practical uses (6.1 is an unofficial ROM from HTC). My wife is tired of hearing me say how much I love this phone, but it’s truly the best phone / PDA I have owned yet!
