For those of you that don’t know, the Citrix VDI solution is an amazing collection of technologies. It addresses all of the key VDI solution areas: desktop deployment, user data management, application deployment, flexibility and a high quality end-user experience.

ThinApp version 4.5 was released in mid-March and has some very nice improvements. For those of you that are new to application virtualization, and more specifically to VMware’s ThinApp product, please visit C/D/H Knowledge Transfer #8 for a sizzling overview of the technology.

There is a lot of buzz going around with different technologies, new releases (see Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2), and companies buying other companies. The one area I see that continues to get a lot of excitement is VDI, or Virtual Desktop Infrastructure.

As the competition heats up with new technology advancements and partnerships, VMware continues to look for ways to improve their industry leading (based on market share not necessarily on marketing lingo or personal opinion) Virtual Infrastructure product. In their latest release, called vSphere, they improve features for high availability.
VMware Fault Tolerance (FT) is integrated with VMware High Availability (HA) and allows for the failover of virtual machines (VM) without a loss in service.

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) has quickly been adopted by many companies as the solution for intranets/extranets, content management, business intelligence reporting, as well as an extensible development framework. C/D/H has numerous large scale MOSS projects ongoing at any given time. While MOSS 2007 provides quite a bit of functionality right out of the box, there are a few solutions that can be implemented along with your MOSS design to drastically improve the overall security of your solution. The four I will briefly discuss are Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server, RSA SecurID, Forefront Security for SharePoint, and Microsoft Rights Management Services (RMS).
