ThinApp 4.5 – New and Improved
Eric Inch
I enjoy learning, using and helping others through technology. This is my second year with C/D/H after many years of consulting for numerous small and mid-sized companies. I enjoy challenging projects and continual improvement in all areas. Most recently, I have been working to help grow the virtualization practice at C/D/H and hopefully add that area to the already impressive expertise in infrastructure consulting at C/D/H.
When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my family. I have two little girls who keep me extremely busy but are always the highlight of my day.

ThinApp version 4.5 was released in mid-March and has some very nice improvements. For those of you that are new to application virtualization, and more specifically to VMware’s ThinApp product, please visit C/D/H Knowledge Transfer #8 for a sizzling overview of the technology.
As for the new features included in version 4.5:
- Startup time improvements – Application start time is significantly improved. Some applications will launch twice as fast.
- Bandwidth consumption improvements – A new build process arranges application packages more efficiently, reducing the amount of code required on the endpoint to start the program.
- Memory sharing improvements– When multiple users are logged into the same machine (see Remote Desktop Services or XenApp), pages from one instance of an open application will be shared with other application users.
- Optimization for memory or disk – You have the ability to configure packages as needed to optimize disk size or memory utilization.
- I/O improvements – Performance improvements for VDI environments by reducing system swap file use.
- Relink utility – Utility to upgrade existing packages to version 4.5 without repackaging or rebuilding the entire package. Can upgrade the application without having the project files.
- Full support for Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 – This is extremely important because Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are the greatest operating systems ever released.
I am a huge fan of VMware ThinApp and encourage everyone to take a look at it, demo it, and experience the capabilities.
