I have been a fan of Windows Mobile (WM) devices for years – since the Windows CE days.  I have owned other phones, like the Palm Treo, but I keep coming back to the Windows Mobile platform.  My son thinks iPhone is hip with its slick interface, but I find that my AT&T Tilt running WM 6.1 has more practical uses (6.1 is an unofficial ROM from HTC).  My wife is tired of hearing me say how much I love this phone, but it’s truly the best phone / PDA I have owned yet!

Here’s a quick rundown of my favorite features on this phone:

  • Vastly improved battery life and performance
  • Slide out QWERTY keyboard – I love this feature the most.  It can almost replace my laptop for email.
  • Outlook Mobile – email, calendar, tasks, notes, contacts synchronization – I am always in sync with my Exchange server.
  • Office Mobile – Word, Excel, PowerPoint – very handy for reading attached documents, including Office 2007 document formats.
  • The IE browser – it now supports zoom within a page and macro to see the entire page.  This is needed when the site doesn’t recognize and support the mobile form factor (Google supports mobile browsers).
  • High Speed Internet – although AT&T tries to hide this feature, if you run \Windows\Internet Sharing.exe you can connect your laptop to the Internet using the phone as your access point (you can do this when you have Edge coverage, or “E”, on the top menu bar, but for real high speed you need to be in a 3G area.  There is also a program you can install – a Windows Mobile WiFi router – making your phone a wireless hot spot for other laptops to connect and use!  See http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-wmwifirouter-v0-89.html for more information).
  • The 3 megapixel camera – it is one of the best in-phone cameras on the market.
  • Built-in GPS – you can use this with a subscription navigation service, a 3rd party navigation system, or like I use it, for free with Live Search.

I agree that Windows Mobile 6 is powerful and useful. However, I find the one-handed operation capabilities of my Samsung i760 is second to none, bar the Palm Treo.

The Smasung i760 is nice but keep your eye on the Samsung Blackjack III coming in October. That one will probably woo me over. It has the best features of the Tilt – minus the slide out keyboard – still full QWERTY keyboard on the front – but here’s the coup de grace – touch screen with a stylus – in the same small package as the Blackjack II!
